Why I hate my Cannon Elura 50
It started acting up exactly two weeks after the warranty expired. Apparently I am not the only one; all Canon camcorders have this 'remove tape' problem.

Update: Elura returned bac kto life sometime in Last June, early July, then was completely useless (mosaicing effect and no sound on recordings, if you can get the tape into the camera).
Finally sent it to Canon Service Center in CA, sometime in late 2004. 1-year warranty expires in May 2004, I was counting on Citybank MasterCard extended wareanty. Canon did not charge anything for the fix. It's working so far, but I rarely use it; I love my new Sony DCR-HC40, which was/is significantly cheaper than Elura. [E-bay maybe?]
